As you may already know, we have some pretty strict standards for the 500+ ingredients in our kitchen. These requirements are far from arbitrary; in fact, they are this way for good reason. At our inception, we knew we wanted to build a nourishing food company, but we needed to understand what that meant at a very deep level. So we dove headfirst into a one-year immersion bootcamp learning about everything from major food system issues such as factory farming, food waste, harmful food additives, and so much more. This education became the foundation of what is now our Ingredient Standards. Similar to our mentor Whole Foods, one of those standards is our Banned Ingredients list, because we realized it was necessary to recognize which common food system ingredients have no place in our pantry.
Start With The Good Stuff
To take a step back, we always start by crafting our meals from “the good stuff” without exception. Put simply, we believe that the freshest, real ingredients make the best foods, so we:
- Seek farmers who raise animals without the use of drugs or factory farming
- Seek farmers who grow vegetables using practices that support biodiversity
- Source locally when possible, accounting for seasonality and the cost of ingredients
Our food is nutritious and crafted using healthy cooking methods like our grandparents used to make for us when we were kids. It’s amazing how foods good for us are also good for the planet too…this is no coincidence!
We gather ingredients in a thoughtful, sustainable, and transparent manner. Each one of our recipes shows a complete ingredient statement when you order and on the packaging, so you know exactly what you will be eating. We promise you’ll have no trouble pronouncing each and every one of them.
Although we avoid most harmful food additives and toxins by serving whole and organic foods, it’s important we list the substances you will never find in our products – and this list we’ll continue to grow over time:
- Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
- Artificial colors & flavors
- Artificial sweeteners – aspartame, sucralose, saccharin
- Brominated vegetable oil
- Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH, rBST)
- Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)
- Bleached/Processed sugar & flour
- High fructose corn syrup
- Hydrogenated oils (trans fats)
Why Do We Ban These Ingredients?
Eating clean doesn’t have to be hard; we actually believe it’s quite simple. Not only do each one of these banned ingredients not add nutrients to your diet, they are actually harmful or potentially harmful to your body over time. Many of these banned ingredients have been created by scientists to (in theory) enhance flavor, texture, or longevity of products you find on the shelves in the cheapest way possible. When you craft meals using fresh ingredients, you don’t need these additives and artificially created substances, and your body thanks you for it.
Eating whole, nutritiously balanced meals not only tastes better, but lays a foundation for feeling your best every day, not only for yourself, but for those who love and care about you too. Now, who doesn’t want that? You can feel confident that we have your back. It is our promise to always innovate and be good stewards to the future of food, so this list is constantly evaluated as we grow and as science and technology evolves.
